Dietary guidelines for adults 2 is, naturally, a follow up to
article 1, and focuses on what foods constitute a good diet
where article 1 focused upon why we need a good diet. My
approach is that food should be fun because most health food
aficionados that I know don’t seem to smile too often and
therefore I don’t hold them up as good examples. Eating is a
major part of life and life should be fun; if we only get one
life what’s the point in being miserable? The challenge for
healthy eating is to make healthy food fun to eat and reward
yourself occasionally with a treat and to heck with the diet.

We need to eat fresh vegetables, fruits, whole grains, nuts,
dairy products and drink plenty of water to have a perfect diet.
We also have to accept that certain people have allergies. The
most common allergies are dairy products and nuts. Just because
you have an allergy you shouldn’t use it as an excuse not to eat
a healthy diet; if you can’t eat nuts eat higher fruit or
vegetables to compensate. Using a little common sense will
overcome all perceived obstacles. Once you have a diet based
upon healthy foods you can add a few luxuries like chocolate and
ice cream providing it is within your daily calorie allowance.

A healthy breakfast is cereal, or oatmeal (porridge) with fresh
fruit and a glass of milk. If you are really rushed for time a
fresh fruit smoothie is great. Alternatively a couple of slices
of toasted whole-grain bread. Do away with common white bread it
acts like glue in your intestines and creates digestive
problems. If you take toast it is always sensible to eat at
least one piece of fresh fruit.

If you feel like a snack mid-morning eat a few nuts, a raw
carrot or a piece of fruit.

Lunch should consist of a sandwich made with whole-grain bread,
a piece of fruit and some green salad leaves. – Common question:
“Should I add salad dressing?” – Why not. If you like salad
dressing use it or the food becomes boring but use it in
moderation.

Afternoon snack – same as morning snack.

Dinner should have meat or fish; red meat is OK in reasonable
servings about three times each week. It must have vegetables
including peas or beans and if you can utilize fresh fruit for
dessert that is even better. Berries are especially healthy and
tasty.

To summarize you must eat seven servings of fruit and/or
vegetables every day. This is an absolute minimum requirement
for a healthy body. Frozen is fine if you are unsure of the
freshness of vegetables or fruit because it is snap frozen when
fresh and retains the nutrients. Older fruit and vegetables lose
nutrient value.

There is much to play with in this diet and the challenge is to
make it fun when mixed with some of your favorites.

Terminal Cancer Patients Fighting Back With Omega-3 Fats

In 2000, a 78-year-old man was diagnosed with terminal lung
cancer and told by his doctor he had only a few months to live.

Tumors Down to 10 Percent

Today, the cancerous tumors in his lungs have shrunk to 10
percent of what they were in 2000, according to last year’s
computed tomography scans. What caused this was not a common
medical treatment such as chemotherapy or surgical excision.

An Omega-3 Diet

How is this possible? His neighbor, Ron Pardini, a professor of
biochemistry and associate director of the Nevada Agricultural
Experiment Station, told him to drastically increase his intake
of omega-3 fatty acids, which are often found in fish oil or
golden algae oil.

He began to take a high dose of fish oil and golden algae oil
capsules daily, while at the same time reducing corn-based
foods. Corn contains omega-6 fatty acids, which have been found
to increase cancer growth.

Fights Cancer in Mice

Pardini’s research showed that omega-3 fatty acids significantly
depress the growth of human mammary, ovarian, colon, prostate
and pancreatic cancer cells that were injected into mice. His
studies also demonstrated that fish oil consumption can improve
a mouse’s responsiveness to chemotherapy.

Fish oil research began when it was observed that Inuit Eskimo
populations suffer from fewer breast and prostate cancer deaths.
So far, though, most studies have been limited to animal models.

    third party that has analyzed the product
  • Hire a company to
    test the product yourself

2. Confirm that there are very low oxidation products in the cod
liver oil.

Cod liver oil has long-chain unsaturated fats (primarily EPA and
DHA) and they are very susceptible to oxidation or damage. If
the oil is not processed properly damage will occur.

Many years ago nearly all the fish oils were oxidized. That is
why when you mention cod liver oil to most anyone they turn up
their nose in disgust. Typically, they only taste bad when they
are oxidized.

3. Make certain your cod liver oil has therapeutic levels of
vitamin E in it.

Because fish and cod liver oils are very susceptible to
oxidation and rancidity, nearly all manufacturers insert a small
amount of one unit of vitamin E per teaspoon. This is sufficient
to prevent oxidation of the fish oil in the bottle.

However, after you consume it this is woefully inadequate. Your
body will tend to oxidize the fish oil and much larger doses of
vitamin E are needed to prevent the fish oil from going rancid
in your body.

There are a number of high-quality fish/cod liver oils on the
market. Many of you know I recommend Carlson’s. If you can’t

Seven Ways to Cope With Burnout

If you reach a point where you feel you can’t take it anyfarther,
you’ve arrived–at a point of overwhelm that pop psychology
refers to as “burnout.” It is a point of emotional exhaustion,
mental confusion, and even physical fatigue.

The word itself originated from a description of a busted light
bulb.

However, while you can’t do anything about a light bulb that
won’t work anymajor, there is plenty that you can do with
psychological overwhelm. You might even say that unlike a light
bulb, a human being is a self-renewing system.

Here are seven simple remedies to renew your mind, body, and
soul.

One. Step out into nature. Go to the mountains, the forest, or
the ocean. And if you’re really strapped for natural resources,
go to a local park. I’m not sure how this works, but when you
spend a sufficient amount of time in nature, you feel
rejuvenated and your mind comes up with fresh ideas on how to
cope with your pressing situation.

Two. Reframe. If you feel stressed because you are doing a task
that you dislike, use your imagination to make it further
enjoyable. For example, if you’re raking leaves, and you just
hate gardening, then imagine that you’re raking in money, and
that each leaf represents a hundred dollar bill. This will
actually spark creative ideas in your mind on how you can
improve your income.

Three. Energize. Go to a health-food store and get an energy
supplement. Vitamins, minerals, and herbs can help your
metabolism recuperate from the stress. Most health-food stores
have someone to assist you, as well as reference books and
videos on what to take for your particular condition.

Four. Introspect. In a notebook, write down everything that
bothers you until you can come up with a way that you can change

unhappy when your body is completely relaxed. The rise of stress
hormones in your body, create a fight-or-flight response in your
nervous system. Systematic physical relaxation reverses this
condition.

Seven. Talk to an expert. Visit someone who can help you or read
a book or hear an audio program by a stress reduction expert. As
you open your mind to new information, you shift your stuck
thinking and find new ways of dealing with the troubling
situation.

Using any of these simple remedies or a combination for burnout
will help you get your perspective back.

Inflammation has been in the news a lot lately. Not just inflammation
but silent inflammation. It’s been the topic in countless newspaper
articles and TV news reports. So what’s all the fuss about silent
inflammation?

According to Dr. Barry Sears author of The Anti Inflammation Zone,
Silent inflammation is inflammation that you can’t feel and what’s larger
average Americans are leading a lifestyle that causes chronic silent
inflammation. He also states that silent inflammation is the first sign
that your body is out of balance and you are no longer well. You can’t
feel it but its grinding down your heart, your brain, and your immune
system. It’s insidious and is the greatest threat to your wellness.

When over produced by the body, three hormones – Cortisol, Insulin and
Pro-Inflammatory Eicosanoids – contribute to silent inflammation and
set the stage for disease.
